Awareness on "Biosafety Aspects of GE Plants"

The course on  “Biosafety Aspects of GE Plants” has been prepared as part of UNEP/GEF supported Phase II Capacity Building Project on Biosafety implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India. Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) served as the Project Coordination Unit (PCU). 


The objective of the project is to strengthen biosafety management system in India with a view to ensure adequate level of protection for transfer, handling and use of living modified organisms also referred to as genetically modified organisms. The project activities focused on four thrust areas viz. risk assessment and risk management (RARM), handling, transport, packaging and identification (HTPI), socio economic consideration (SEC) and enhancing public awareness (PA).  


The course modules are based on the “Biosafety Resource Kit” consisting of five brochures on important biosafety aspects and guidance documents prepared under the project. BCIL is the technical agency for development of e-course. Centre for e-Learning, Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa (SGTB) College, University of Delhi designed the course. The following aspects are covered:  

1. Introduction to GE plants

2. Regulatory framework for GE plants

3. Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

4. Confined field trials of GE plants

5. Food safety assessment for GE plants

6. Environment safety assessment for GE plants


The course is available in two languages i.e. English and Hindi and are available as Unit- 1 and Unit-2. 


This course on “Biosafety Aspects of GE Plants” has been prepared for students, teachers and other stakeholders under the component on enhancing public awareness in understanding biosafety aspects based on factual information.

Instructor bio

Dr. Vibha Ahuja, Biotech Consortium India Limited

Dr. Vibha Ahuja, M.Sc. (Hons. School), PhD (Microbiology) has approximately 27 years of experience in undertaking the project assignments in the area of biosafety and biotechnology. She has been dealing with projects connected with regulatory and biosafety aspects, particularly with reference to modern biotechnology applications, biodiversity and environmental/ industrial biotechnology. These include undertaking capacity building activities, imparting training and preparing well researched publications for various stakeholders etc. Dr. Ahuja has closely worked with key regulatory agencies and committees in India and other Asian countries viz. Bhutan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. 
Dr. Ahuja was the lead officer, project coordination unit for UNEP-GEF supported Phase II biosafety capacity building project. In the preparation of this course, she was assisted by Dr. Rini Dhawan, Senior Project Executive and Ms. Manika Gupta, Project Executive of BCIL.

Dr. Vimal Rarh, Joint Director & Project Head, GAD-TLC of MHRD, Govt. of India (as Technical & MOOC Expert)

 

 

Dr Vimal Rarh is a senior Chemistry Faculty at SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi. With a decade of experience in the corporate e-learning world, she is amongst the pioneers in implementing ICT in Higher education in the country and is a tech-savvy teacher. She has to her credit many research papers, a patent, books, presentations, projects and invited talks at local, National and International forums.

She is contributing in policy making at national level in various committees like formulating Online Courses Regulations – 2018 of UGC,  e-Governance Committee at UGC and e-Content Committee for National Educational Alliance in Technology (NEAT) of AICTE. 

She is also managing three centres working in the field of e-learning at the National level over and above her teaching responsibilities. She is the only Chemistry teacher of the country to be awarded the National Resource Centre of Chemistry of MHRD, Govt. of India, for developing ARPIT courses two times in a row for all Chemistry teachers of India. She is Joint Director of Guru Angad Dev Teaching Learning Centre (GAD-TLC) of MHRD, Govt. of India and Deputy Director of Centre for e-Learning, SGTB Khalsa College.

Under her Academic, Administrative & Technical guidance,  more than 50 MOOCs in 4 quadrant format have been developed for SWAYAM and other platforms.  She has co-designed the Four Quadrant template for e-Content for ePGPathshala of UGC which has been accepted as a standard for quality and quantity of development and delivery of MOOCs.  She has herself developed more than 500 modules in four quadrant format as author/co-author including video recording besides providing technical coordination for more that 5000 modules.
