Libraries are universally recognized as important social institutions and no community is considered complete without a library system. However, libraries are facing change due to impact of ICT, changing patron needs, changing information environment or Web/Google that is trying to replace Reference Librarians. Use of Disruptive technologies is resulting in transition from Print to Digital, Changes takes place from Forms to Formats, Delivery systems, and it is inevitable.

There is a transformation in the need of library users and due to ICT, there is a change in the resources, services and products of the libraries. Every institution is now trying to compete in the national and international rankings and with the changed roles and services; the libraries and librarians are playing key role.

So the purpose of this ARPIT course is to impart knowledge regarding emerging trends and technologies in library and information services like Library Automation, Digitalization, Institutional Repository and Digital Library Services, Consortia based Services, QR Code, EM and RFID implementation, Open Access, Outreach programs, Reference Management, Open Science, Virtual/Digital Reference Services, Ask the Librarian, Content Management, CAS/SDI services, Profiling System, Discovery Services, Web 2.0 and 3.0 based Services, Use of Social Media, Green Library Concept, to help in Ranking/Accreditation, Remote Login, Cloud computing, Mobile based Library Services, Use of Expert Systems and Robotics, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality Tools and Virtual Reality Tools, Semantics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning and How to be a Smart Librarian by Smart Involvements etc.

People are thinking that the role and future prospects of library professionals are decreasing rather we can say that they are becoming more important provided they are keeping pace with emerging trends & technologies in LIS and willing to go out of box.

Intended Audience: Research Scholars; Faculty; Library and Information Professionals.

Prerequisites: Masters in Library and Information Science or Equivalent.

Learning Outcomes/Objectives: This course will be helpful in keeping abreast of with new trends and technologies arising in libraries. It is just an effort to assist:

to enhance professional competence and skills;
to engage in collaborative team work;
in taking library and information services beyond the four-walls of the libraries;
to use ICT tools for effective user services;
to produce need-based instructional materials for the users;
to discover new areas of research and enquiry in the field of library and information science.
to explore application of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and other technologies to serve the library community.
To identify New Roles for LIS Professionals to Survive in the Changed LIS Environment.

Course layout

It is a course of 40 hours, i.e. 20 hours of e-content and 20 hours of video content. At your time, place and convenience. You need to devote just about an hour a day for five days in a week. It is flexible course. We need to complete 40 hours in about four months’ time. It will be a blend of e-text, self-check exercises, tasks, activities, audio and video content, assignments with continuous and term end evaluation. The most important parts of the course, is, Discussion Forum, here we all can discuss, comment, suggest and empower ourselves with the help of the discussion forum. There will be a list of resources for further studies. There is a group of enthusiastic techno-savvy experts invited from across the country to support the course.

Instructor bio

Dr. NABI HASAN is the Librarian & Head, Central Library, IIT Delhi. Earlier, he has served as the University Librarian of Aligarh Muslim University. He is the "FIRST NORMAN E. BORLAUG FELLOW FROM INDIA (PDF)" in Library Information Systems (PDF), trained in Electronic Library Resources Management at Cornell University, New York, USA. Winner of many awards, recently he has won the SLA’s BONNIE HILDITCH INTERNATIONAL LIBRARIAN AWARD 2018 the USA and also been conferred with the SLP-SLA Asian Fellow Award 2019. He is Member of many reputed external committees including National Steering and National Advisory Committees of E-ShodhSindu (eSS) Consortia, Govt. of India, etc. He has an experience of about 25 years of active library services and postgraduate teaching and has published 15 Books/composite Books and 130 papers/articles. He has successfully implemented many innovative library projects, including three World Bank/ICAR assisted Library Information Systems Projects and currently is the PI of the Project on “Strengthening of Central Library.” Dr. Hasan is currently the President-Elect 2019 of SLA Asian Chapter, Vice-President – IASLIC, Joint Secretary - ASIALA, and Executive Committee Member of Delhi Library Association.
