Stars And Stellar Systems

Dhruba J Saikia was a Professor at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) where he worked for over 40 years, and now heads the Teaching Learning Centre and the National Resource Centre of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). His research interests are on different aspects of extragalactic astronomy and astrophysics, especially active galaxies, and more recently on education, with an emphasis on higher education. Besides TIFR and IUCAA, he has been engaged in research and/or teaching at the Jodrell Bank Observatory of the University of Manchester; National Radio Astronomy Observatory USA; Queen's University at Kingston, Canada; Australia Telescope National Facility (CASS) of CSIRO Australia, the University of Western Australia and Cotton University, India. He has published over 150 research papers in leading journals, and co-edited two volumes: Low-Frequency Radio Universe (Astronomical Society of the Pacific 2009) with D A Green, Y Gupta and T Venturi; Fluid Flows to Black Holes, A tribute to S Chandrasekhar on His Birth Centenary (World Scientific 2013) with Virginia Trimble. He was the Editor of the Bulletin of the Astronomical Society of India and the Founding Vice-Chancellor of Cotton University at Guwahati. He was awarded the Professor M K Vainu Bappu Gold Medal of the Astronomical Society of India and is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India.
