Immunology is the study of the immune system. The immune system is the body’s own defence mechanism to protect from various harmful microbial infections. A basic course in immunology is important for those students who opt for undergraduate and post graduate courses in biological sciences.  The course focus on understanding basic immunology, and also discuss about various immunotechniques and their applications. The course covers discussions on the various components of the immune system, the activations of those components during immune response and the different types of immune responses.  All the components of the immune system whether it’s the cells or organs, the different proteins or the various immuno mediators, they all work together to give a highly co-ordinated and interactive immune response to eliminate any foreign body that may be harmful to the body. The course also has discussions on some of the important immunotechniques like radioimmunoassay, ELISA, western blotting, fluorescence in situ hybridisation etc. It is a comprehensive course covering vast areas of immunology. On undergoing this course, the students will be learning the fundamental knowledge of immunology along with its importance and applications.

Instructor bio


Dr. Reena Haobam has been working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology, Manipur University since 2009. She was awarded the university gold medal in M.Sc. (Biochemistry) from Manipur University in 2002. Later, she received her Ph.D. Degree from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She had worked in the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (CSIR), Kolkata for her doctoral degree in the field of regenerative therapy for Parkinson’s disease using stem cells. Her research is mainly focused on the genomics of drug addiction and tuberculosis. She has successfully completed a DBT project on “Association of gene polymorphisms in DAT1 and OPRM1 with drug addiction in a population from Manipur”. At present she is handling two research projects: A multi-institutional DBT project on pharmacogenomics of Tuberculosis and genotyping of MDR-TB in north east India in which she is the project co-ordinator and PI. The other project is an IBSD-partnership programme where their research team works on identifying neuroprotective molecules from plant sources from the rich biodiversities of Manipur. She has many international research papers to her credit and has about 265 citations. She also has a US-patent application for “Treatment of brain Disorders”.
