This course titled “Society and Media” primarily deals with understanding the two-way flow of how media as an institution has played a significant role in the shaping of the society and what are the important spheres of its change and similarly how with the evolution of society to a different stage has affected media as an institution and pushed for its development to newer forms. The principal aim of this course is to create an interdisciplinary understanding among the students in terms of correlating the crucial social concepts of society and media and providing the students a wider perspective in terms of relating the process of change within the society with media and the transformation of media as a medium and tool with the evolution of society. The students will also be made familiar with the contemporary trends within the society which have emerged due to media interaction and the nature of challenges and issues that are associated with it. Most importantly, the students will be subjected to different critical spheres which have been the significant attributes for change within the society through media. The students from this course will be able to better comprehend the existing patterns of social and economic change and will be able to relate and approach the phenomena from a multi-dimensional perspective.

Course layout


Week I:
In the 1st week, the students will only be dealing with the basic terms and concepts related to society and media and evolution of media within the society.

Week II: In the 2nd week, the students will only be dealing with the debates on f language and popular culture being framed within the society through media as well as diversity and marginalization.

Week III: In the 3rd week, the students will be engaging with contemporary media forms such as digital media and the nature of participation being shaped by it and lastly the nature of emerging challenges that exist between society and media’s interaction.

Week IV: In the 4th week, the students will be dealing with debates which will be advance in comparison with the 1st unit. They will be engaged with the debates on the ideas of social change within the society and the role of media in the process. In addition to that, the students will also develop an understanding about the kind of stereotyping that is taking place within the society due to media and also the nature of convergence that is emerging. 

Week V: In the 5th week, the students will be engaging with the debates on the dominant and the alternative paradigms of change and the role of media in the process. In addition to that, the students will also be dealing with the notions of literacy and its shaping by media as an institution and its impact on change.  

Week VI:
In the 6th week, the students will be dealing with the impact of digital media and social transformation and the nature of intervention that exists or will emerge due to the process of change brought about within the society by media. 

Week VII:
In the 7th week, the students will be dealing with the notions of margins and marginality which has emerged due to the process of change and the issues and challenges of the margins. The students will also be understanding the debates on regional versus religion based marginality and different forms of marginalization that exist within the society and how the process of socialization is taking place.   

Week VIII: In the 8th week, the students will be dealing with the debates on the mainstream culture, role of media and the issues of marginality. In addition to that, the students will also be engaging with notions of caste, class and identity and its correlation with marginality. Most importantly, the students from this week’s unit will develop an understanding about the ideas of inclusion and exclusion that exist within the society and the challenges it is creating within the society. 

Week IX: In the 9th week, the students will be dealing with debates on margins as the alternate voices and their issues in terms of their rights, the impact of media in highlighting their issues and the existing challenges within the society. 

Week X: In the 10th week, the students will be dealing with topic on gender and the changing notions of gender within the society and the role of media. The students will also be dealing with how gender has a pivotal role to play in the process of development and how media can be an important institution in pushing for modern forms of change within the society. 

Week XI: In the 11th week, the students will be dealing with the debates on gender which are further complex in nature. The students will be exposed to the issues of gender and representation within the society and media. The students will also be dealing with the debates on gender and the contemporary issues and the placement of media in such social scenario.

Week XII: In the 12th week, the students will be introduced to the topic on media and youth development where the students will understand the notions of youth and how it has transformed within the society. The students will also be exposed to the idea of youth as a concept within society and how they have been perceived in terms of societal development. The students will further understand how media mediates the cultural consumption of youth and how does it impact society and in what manner. 
 
Week XIII: In the 13th week, the students will be dealing with the notion of popular culture and its significance on youth. Further the students will be dealing with the role of cinema in shaping youth perception towards society and development and lastly the social and political challenges of youth in regard to participation.
 
Week XIV: In the 14th week, the students will be dealing with the changing forms of participation in relation with contemporary forms of media. The students will also be dealing with new media as alternative space for engagement for the youth and the nature of democratic challenges.
    
Week XV: In the 15th week the students will be given additional practical assignments and tests for revision of the complete course before the commencement of their external exams.

Dr. Durgesh Tripathi

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU)
Dr. Durgesh Tripathi is the founding faculty member of University School of Mass Communication (USMC) at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), New Delhi. He has completed his Post-Doctoral Fellowship from Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) in 2017. He is also the recipient of prestigious Bhartendu Harishchandra Award (Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India) for his academic contribution. Dr. Tripathi's contributions can be exemplified with 3 major research projects and as a Co-Principle Investigator of “Communication and Media Studies” for Open Education Resources (e-PG Pathshala), an e-learning initiative undertaken by INFLIBNET, UGC and MHRD, Govt. of India. ICSSR has also published two books on Media and Youth Studies written by Dr. Tripathi. Dr Tripathi has organized 3 Research Methodology Workshops and 2 National Seminars on the themes of Media, Governance and Youth and Gender Sensitization sponsored by ICSSR, New Delhi. In addition to that, Dr. Tripathi has a rich academic contribution in the fields of Communication Research, Youth Studies, New Media and Political Participation. He has also been invited for extension lectures at Shanghai International University, China; Burapha University, Thailand; Hallym University, Seoul, The Republic of South Korea; University of Teknologi Mara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, University of Bonn, Germany. He has also chaired a session in 4th European International Conference at Antalya, Turkey and has visited places of academic eminence at Toronto, Canada, Paris, France and Singapore. Dr. Tripathi has participated and presented his understanding on Digital Media, Youth and Political Participation at the House of Commons (Parliament of Britain, UK), University of Liverpool in London (UK), University of York, American University (Washington, District of Columbia, USA).
