The main purpose of this course is to provide Scientific information on wildlife resource which is part of our nature. Many people are un aware of wildlife resources of India and their role is not understood for human survival. Due to hunting, poaching, and indiscriminate use of natural resources, the wild animal’s habitat is shrinking. Many species are becoming endangered and on the way of extinction. At this juncture, if we educate public and other interested people about usefulness of wildlife, rules and regulations available to conserve them in their natural abode, it is possible to control the depletion of valuable wild animal species on this planet earth. Therefore, in this course, efforts will be made to know about the values of wildlife, their conservations and modes of conservation. In this course all possible efforts will be made to provide a platform to interact with wildlife experts and discuss the wild animals and human conflicts. It is an awareness course, to provide continuous education on wild animals to and to develop awareness among public.

Instructor bio

Dr S Basavarajappa

University of Mysore

Dr S. Basavarajappa is a PhD, holder in Zoology and specialized in Entomology, Ecology and Environment related issues. Presently, he is working as a Professor in Zoology, University of Mysore, Mysore. He has > 22 years of work experience in various capacities in the fields of teaching, research and extension activities. He has worked at Karnataka University, Kuvempu University and three years at undergraduate colleges also. He has published 115 research papers in peer-reviewed journals of national and international repute. Presented > 100 research papers in national and international conferences, delivered >100 conservation biology related talks at various institutions. Edited two books in Kannada, one manual in English and associated with the edition work of Zoology Encyclopedia in Kannada, published by Prasaranga, University of Mysore and translated non-Chordata in Kannada, sponsored by CIIL, Mysore. He is a freelance Kannada writer, published >200 science articles in Kannada, of the majority, were related to wildlife conservation. Under his guidance, five students obtained PhD, and five students have obtained M.Phil. degrees and presently working with eight students for PhD degrees.

He has completed two research projects and is also associated with Zoology Department UGC-SAP and UGC-CAS-Phase-1 programs. Presently he is working as a research collaborator in the VJNL project undertaken by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He was awarded Suvarna Kannadiga from Mumbai Kannada Sangha in 2006, Senior Scientist from Chiang Mai Rajhabat University, Thailand in 2014 and Distinguished Scientist from Venus International Foundation, Chennai in 2016.

Course certificate

Assessment/Assignment marks will be considered for Internal Marks and will carry 30 percent for overall Result.

End Term Exam- will have 100 questions and will carry 70 percent of overall Result.

*All students, who obtain 40% marks in in-course assessment and 40% marks in end-term proctored exam separately, will be eligible for certificate and credit transfer.
