By 2050, nearly 7 of 10 people in the world will live in cities. With more than 80% of global GDP generated in cities, urbanization can contribute to sustainable growth if managed well by increasing productivity, allowing innovation and new ideas to emerge.
However, the pace and scale of urbanization brings challenges, including addressing accelerated demand for different services like affordable housing, well-connected transport systems, and other infrastructure, basic services, as well as employment, particularly for urban poor who live in informal settlements for livelihood opportunities.The present course presents the learner with   different modules like emergence, scope, basic concepts in Urban Sociology, urbanization, theories in Urban Sociology, urban problems, urban planning, urban governance and urban development policies

Dr. Vinita Pandey, Osmania University, Hyderabad
Dr. Vinita Pandey, has been teaching Sociology in Department of Sociology, Nizam College, Osmania University for 20 years. She is M.A. in Sociology and obtained her Doctorate for her work on Crisis of Isolation and identity of Urban Middle Class Families. Her areas of research interest are Urban Sociology, Development Studies and Qualitative Research and Social Psychology. She has designed several UGC approved Add on Courses and Soft Skills training programmes. She has written course material for various Open Universities and centres for Distance Education. She is also resource persons for HRDCs of various Universities in India. Dr. Pandey has published 08 books and 29 research articles in national and international journals so far. She has done two minor and two major ICSSR (New Delhi) research projects. Dr. Vinita Pandey is recipient of Vidya Shiromani award, for Excellent and Commendable services in the field of Education by Citizens Council, Andhra Pradesh. As part of her future endeavors Dr. Pandey is keen to take up research on urban issues and consolidate her efforts further in capacity building of students and youth and facilitate practical training to be more socially responsible citizens of the world.
