Making of Contemporary India
The proposed course is going to cover a period of Indian history starting with rise of Gandhi in India’s freedom struggle and culminating in our very recent past. In this long journey covering nearly seven decades which are full of epoch –making events in the world history. India gained her freedom after a prolong struggle but while gaining it she had to part with portions and people for creation of another state. India a colony of the British had suffered in many ways for two centuries. Moreover, India is a country of various races, religions and ethnic groups. Some such groups also asserted their rights. After her independence India had to address all such issues and also has started to modernise herself. The biggest achievement of her is to adopt democracy and to hold periodic elections. To satisfy all stake holders it has drawn her constitution in that manner. It made a great leap forward in industrialisation and technical innovations and through five years’ plans it tried to bring equity in all of its parts. To enhance education it has initiated concerted programmes. To bring higher amount of participation in public life reservations for women in three-tyre Panchayati Raj was also affected. While framing her foreign policy India decided to keep herself away from the running cold war between the USA and the then Soviet Russia. India with some countries pursued a non-aligned policy for maintaining balance and peace in world politics.
