This course is an introduction to understand the economic phenomenon from the Sociological perspective. It explores the myriad linkages between the economy and its socio-cultural environment & the ways in which the key elements of economy are situated and conditioned in a socio-cultural context. 

This course offers an introduction to the key concepts and theoretical foundations of Economic Sociology as a specialized branch of Sociology. Students learn socio-cultural bases of various dimensions of economy such as production, distribution, exchange, consumption and markets while emphasizing the impact of norms, social structure, and institutions on economy.

It also highlights the significance of sociological analysis for the study of economic processes and institutions by drawing insights from both theoretically and empirically grounded studies.

To familiarize the students with different theoretical and conceptual aspects of economic sociology
To introduce as a specialized branch of knowledge.
Develop contextual knowledge about the diverse ways in which economy is interlinked with other aspects of society and culture.
Acquire ability to understand and analyze the transformations of economy and its key processes in a historical and comparative perspective.
Develops abilities to generate research questions and arguments about the intersections of economy and society.

Dr. Manjula V

Dr. Manjula V, is working as faculty in Sociology, Government First Grade College, BangaruThirupathi, India. She is UGC NET and KSET Qualified with Ph D. from Bangalore University. Having joined the Department of Collegiate and Technical Education, Government of Karnataka in 2007, she has 15 years of teaching (UG) and research experience.. She has Published 5 international publications in peer reviewed journals & has participated and presented papers in more than 20 national and international conferences/seminars/workshops. 

A resource person, Member of BoS and BoE for UG Sociology, Bangalore University, Jnanabharathi Campus, Bangalore.She has contributed for development of e-content for various courses under the Karnataka LMS project, a Government of Karnataka initiative. 

Course certificate

Assessment/Assignment marks will be considered for Internal Marks and will carry 30 percent for overall Result.

End Term Exam- will have 100 questions and will carry 70 percent of  overall Result.

All students, who obtain 40% marks in in-course assessment and 40% marks in end-term proctored exam separately, will be eligible for certificate and credit transfer.
