Disaster Management is the process of organizing, planning, and applying measures to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters while minimizing their impact on human life, property, and the environment. It involves coordinated efforts across various sectors to enhance resilience and reduce vulnerabilities.

This comprehensive 14-week course offers an in-depth understanding of disaster-related concepts, policies, case studies, and stakeholder roles. It comprises 54 lessons supported by weekly assignments and real-life examples.

Students will begin by learning the concept and phases of disaster management, followed by a focus on types of disasters, both natural and man-made, including slow and rapid-onset events.

Real-world case studies like the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, Cyclone Phailin, Tsunami, Kerala Floods 2018, and Uttarakhand Floods 2013 help contextualize theoretical knowledge.

The course then explores India's disaster framework, including the National Disaster Management Act (2005), National Policy (2009 & 2016), and the role of the National Institute of Disaster Management.

A strong emphasis is laid on vulnerable groups, such as refugees, women, and children, and the psychosocial principles of care during emergencies.

Topics like rehabilitation, resettlement, and the social impacts of disasters provide deeper insights into the recovery phase.

Further modules cover the roles of central/state/district governments, armed forces, fire services, and voluntary organizations in disaster relief.

Students will also examine risk reduction strategies, capacity building, early warning systems, and master planning for resilience.

The final section integrates social work perspectives, emphasizing community-based disaster management and the role of social workers in relief and rehabilitation.

This course is ideal for students, social workers, development professionals, administrators, and anyone interested in building resilient communities and managing disasters effectively.
