Course Description              

This course teaches economic and political aspects behind the rise of Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The period under study saw the emergence of new ideas in the domain of economic, scientific and political thought in Europe; emergence of newer social classes in different parts of Europe; and, the evolution of cultural expression with new form and content. Simultaneously, European expansion took place leading to development of new forms of knowledge and economies in the colonies. The course also explores developments and events in European history of the period such as the Seventeenth Century Crisis, the English Revolution, the Scientific Revolution and the American Revolution. Such events help in understanding the practical dimensions of the ideas developing in Europe. How did texts of political, economic or scientific theory related with developments in related domains of life? How did European explorations in other parts of the world affect the development of forms of knowledge in different domains such as botany, zoology, geography, philosophy, political theory and so on? The course has been divided into Units which break down the subject content thematically.

About the Course Coordinator              

Vikas Rathee is Assistant Professor, Department of History, Central University of Punjab. He has received his Ph.D. from University of Arizona, and M.Phil. from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He has also been a research fellow at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has taught courses on medieval and modern Indian history, World History and Historical Methods to Bachelors and Masters students; and, has taught and delivered lectures at institutions in Punjab, India, Europe and North America. He has written for reputed magazines and journals such as Economic & Political WeeklyEncyclopedia of Islam 3, Outlook India, Scroll and others. His research is based on sources in English, Braj, Marwari, Persian, Urdu and Punjabi languages.

Course certificate

30 Marks will be allocated for Internal Assessment and 70 Marks will be allocated for end-term proctored examination.


Securing 40% in both separately is mandatory to pass the course and get Credit Certificate.
