This course is an interdisciplinary course that blends various health aspects and scientific knowledge of exercise physiology and fitness with practical business skills. It will provide knowledge and clear understanding about the principles of health and fitness.

Nowadays, people are living longer than ever before and are increasingly concerned about maintaining their health and physical fitness.  This course is especially developed to provide individuals knowledge about various health parameters along with education in fitness and business principles in order to effectively serve, motivate, and counsel diverse clients. It will also give the idea of living with a composite status of physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and spiritually well-being and not merely an absence of diseases and infirmity. Altogether the present course consists of 4 credits having forty lectures. The content of the course systematically cover various areas of health and fitness like Concept of health and health education, it’s aims and objectives, the different organizational and administrative set up of health system in India, food classification and the role of nutrition, stress management and good rest for optimal health.

This course will also discuss Fitness and Wellness and their significance in Modern times. Holistic approach to management of health and fitness including diet and exercise (Aerobic and anaerobic); Scope of Fitness Trainer And Health and Fitness Component, Alternative Systems for Health and Fitness; Effect of anaerobic exercise on musculoskeletal system, Endurance, Physical Screening and General Principles of Training. Introduction of Cardio-respiratory System and Assessment of Cardio-respiratory fitness using Maximum aerobic capacity (VO2 max), Types of exercise:  Calisthenics, Aerobics and Dance, Weight Training, Yoga and Other forms of Exercise etc. will also be highlighted. Similarly, many more important topics of nutrition and energy namely Introduction of Water and Electrolyte Balance, Regime of hydration and dehydration and Sports Drink, Nutrition- Caloric Consumption, Weight variation due to dietary habit, Physiological and Metabolic changes during exercise; Recommended nutritional intakes, Dietary guidelines and Nutrient needs for people with different life style and Sport will also be discussed. 

Therefore, for students and people who want to know more about maintaining good health as well as for fitness professionals who are interested in opting a career in recreation facility or start a business in the field of fitness management, a thorough knowledge and skill to change and inspire the lives of others through a strong understanding of physical exercise techniques, proper nutrition etc. is required.

Prof. M. Chourjit Singh is presently working as an a Professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, Manipur University, Imphal. He completed his M.P.E (Physical Education) and Ph.D from Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, Rajasthan. He has also completed P.G. Diploma in Sports Management from Alagappa University, Tamil Nadu and Diploma in Nutrition and Health education from IGNOU. So far he has published twenty seven research papers in various national and International reputed journals. He has also published three books including one text book on Basic Health Education. Further, he is the recipient of GLOBAL YOUTH AWARD 2014 by VK Duggal, His Excellency, the Governor of Manipur during Global Youth Meets 2014 and conferred International Best Oral Presentation Award Physical Education and Sports Science during International Science Congress (ISC 2013) held at Karunya University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. 

Course certificate

1. End-Term Examination:

·         Weightage: 70% of the final result

·         Minimum Passing Criteria: 40%

2. Internal Assessment:

·         Weightage: 30% of the final result

·         Minimum Passing Criteria: 40%

Calculation of IA Marks:

·         Out of all graded weekly assessments/assignments, the top 50% of assignments shall be considered for the calculation of the final Internal Assessment marks.

·         All students who obtain 40% marks in the internal assessment and 40% marks in the end-term proctored exam separately will be eligible for the SWAYAM Credit Certificate.
