This course provides a strategic perspective to understanding platform business models. In contrast to traditional pipeline businesses, platform business models need different treatment, both in terms of strategies and operations. This course will discuss the unique economics of platform businesses, and the specific decisions leaders in platform firms need to take.

This MOOC on platform business models will take a strategic perspective to understanding business that operate as platforms. In contrast to conventional pipeline business models, platform business model firms make certain unique decisions.

Prerequisite:  Basic understanding of micro and macroeconomics; and competitive strategy

The first module of this course will introduce the learner to the core concepts around platforms and network economics. The second module will elaborate on network effects in the context of platforms and ecosystems, and provide insights into how platforms mobilize their networks and solve the penguin problems.

The third module elucidates the criteria used by platform firms in their pricing decisions and introduces the various pricing models available for platform pricing. The fourth module highlights the value architecture of platform firms, including trade-offs around openness and proprietary nature of complement engagements. The final module provides insights into competing in a platform ecosystem, including managing oligopolistic markets, and issues in regulating platforms.

Instructor bio

Srinivasan R

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore
R Srinivasan is Professor of Strategy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. His current research focuses on studying platform business firms; digital transformation of large corporations; and strategic decision making in top management teams. Srinivasan received his doctoral degree from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in 1998. He received the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund scholarship for his doctoral research at IIM Ahmedabad. His areas of teaching at the postgraduate and doctoral levels have been Platform Business Models, Cormpetitive & corporate Strategies, and Strategy Process Research. He has been visiting faculty at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany and other European Universities, delivering courses and lectures on Platform Business Models and Open Innovation. He closely works as advisor and researches on a variety of firms that create and operate platform-based business models. Srinivasan has published his work in various international journals; authored several cases on platform strategies, growth, strategy, and innovation and has presented his research in a number of international academic conferences.

Course certificate

Grading Policy:

There will be (a) one Mid-term Internal Assessment and (b) one Final Exam.

Weightage:
  • Mid-term Internal Assessment: This will carry 25% weightage. This mid term will have questions from first three weeks.
  • Final Exam: This will carry 75% weightage.  This final exam will have questions from all the weeks.

Passing Marks:
  • You will be eligible for a certificate only if you score minimum 40% in Mid-term Internal Assessment and minimum 40% in Final Exam. 
  • Badge on Certificate: If you score 90% or more overall, your certificate will include "badge (gold)" printed.

Final Examination:
  • Type of exam: Computer based exam 
  • Exam Center: You will have to appear at the allotted exam centre and take the exam in person. (You can find the final allotted exam centre details in the admit card (hall ticket)).
  • Admit Card: You can download the Admit card (Hall ticket) around one week before the exam. 
  • QP Pattern: The type of questions may include multiple choice questions, fill in the blanks, essay type (subjective) type, etc. But generally MCQs are commonly provided.
