Instructor bio

Dr. N. Devadasan

Institute of Public Health Bengaluru
Dr N Devadasan has more than 35 years of experience as a public health professional. A medical doctor from CMC Vellore, he started his career in the forests of Mudumalai, Nilgiris, working with the Adivasis and setting up an entire health system for them. This system continues till date with an extensive network of community health workers, first line nursing aides and a 50-bed referral hospital. He joined the WHO as the NPO for communicable diseases in India and contributed significantly to the creation of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme. He has investigated many outbreaks in the country, including three outbreaks of the deadly Nipah Virus. 

He founded the Institute of Public Health in Bengaluru in 2005, essentially to provide a  platform for young public health professionals to conduct health systems research, generate evidence, and use it to influence practice. Other than research and advocacy, IPH is also involved in training, providing online (post masters) courses for professionals. Deva retired as the Director of IPH in June 2019 and handed over the reins of IPH to the next generation of leadership. Currently he is preoccupied with his favorite activity - teaching students (MPH, PhD). He is also the course director of the India Health Policy and Systems Research Fellowship, which grooms mid level public health researchers in health systems and health policy research.
