ABOUT THE COURSE:
This course is designed to educate about the basic concepts of management which will help in building a strong premise to comprehend the advanced topics in the field. It will include the deliberation on the fundamental functions, principles, managerial roles, and context of management. Also, a chronological development of thought, philosophy, and practices of management from the past to present will be explained. Additionally, this course will reflect on the emerging workplace issues to develop a better predictability and comprehension of the evolving managerial needs. Further it will delve with the significance of decision-making and motivating employees in organizations.

Week 1: Introduction to Management: Concept and meaning of Management, Nature of Management, Relation with organizations, components of environment, basic functions, process, Purpose of management-Efficiency vs effectiveness, Administration vs Management, Need to study Management.
Week 2: Types, Roles, and Competencies of Managers: Who Are Managers? Mintzberg’s managerial roles, Classification of managers in organizations, Katz’s three essential managerial skills and their importance relative to managerial level, Power in abilities of a manger, Changes that are impacting managers’ jobs. Role Analysis-concept, method, and techniques of skill analysis.
Week 3: Evolution of management thought-I: Early contributions to management, Classical school of thought: Scientific Management-Contributions and highlights, Administrative Management- Contributions and highlights, Bureaucratic Management- Contributions and highlights
Week 4: Evolution of management thought-II: Background and emergence of Neo-classical school of thought. Major contributions of Neo-classical era: Hawthorne Studies, The Human Relations Movement, Behavioral Science Approach, and, Social Person Era.
Week 5: Evolution of management thought-III: Overview of Modern School of management. Main contributions: The Systems Approach, Quantitative Approach to Management, Quality Approach to Management, The Contingency Approach. Rationale and application of these contributions in contemporary organizations.
Week 6: Contemporary Phase of Management: Understanding VUCA and BANI environment, Emerging needs of contemporary organizations-system and collegial model; Information driven organizations-HR analytics, concept, and concerns of tech-based work; Sustainability-need, concept, fostering sustainability at workplace; Value-laden culture-significance and key values, Present and future managerial competencies to deal with VUCA and BANI challenges.
Week 7: Planning: Concept, significance and purpose, process of planning, how do managers plan? Planning & performance, Criticism of planning, Types of planning, Levels of planning. Goal setting- Concept, Approaches in Goal setting- Traditional, MBO, Steps in goal setting, Levels of planning, Types of plans. 
Week 8: Decision Making: Concept and Significance, characteristics, Process of Decision Making, how to make effective decisions?  Decision-making styles, and conditions, Types of decisions and decision makers, Decision making biases and errors, Rationality, Bounded Rationality & Intuition, Groupthink in decision-making.
Week 9: Organizing: Meaning, concept, Need, characteristics, nature, Importance, Process. Basic organizing factors: Work Specialization, Span of Control, Chain of Command, Authority, Delegation, Rationale of organizing architecture: Vertical and Horizontal- Functional, Divisional, Geographic, Matrix structure
Week 10: Control: Meaning, nature, and importance of control. Process and control model, Requirements of an effective system, Characteristics and scope, and types of control- Feedforward, concurrent and feedback control. Cybernetic control, non-cybernetic control. Techniques of Control-traditional and modern techniques, Balance Score Card-Concept, elements, and applications. 
Week 11: Leading: Meaning, concept, significance, and need of leadership in management, Managers vs. Leaders. Early Leadership Theories- Trait Theory, Behavioral Theories, Likert’s leadership styles. Contingency Leadership Theories: Situational leadership theory, Blake & Mouton managerial grid, Path-Goal Theory, Vroom and Yetton model, LPC model, Transactional vs transformational leadership and other leadership perspectives.
Week 12: Motivating employees: Meaning and Concept, Importance, Characteristics, Motivation process, Types of motivation- extrinsic, intrinsic, financial, non-financial motivation. Early Theories of Motivation: Maslow’s need theory, Theory X and Y, Herzberg’s two factor theory. Contemporary theory of motivation: Three needs theory, Equity theory, Goal setting theory, Expectancy theory, Reinforcement theory, Designing motivating jobs, Issues in modern workplaces regarding motivation of employees.

Instructor bio

Dr. Sheema Tarab

Aligarh Muslim University
Dr. Sheema Tarab is an Assistant Professor at Department of Commerce, AMU in the OB-HRM area. She holds a Ph.D. in Commerce (Emphasis on HRD) from Aligarh Muslim University. She is teaching Management fundamentals, HRM and Organizational Behaviour courses both at UG and PG level. Her idea of classroom teaching is to actively practice interactive methods of lecturing and incorporate innovative teaching pedagogy such as case teaching, simulations, and brainstorming exercises for the holistic learning of students.


Prof. Nawab Ali Khan

Prof. Nawab Ali Khan is a Professor at Department of Commerce, Aligarh Muslim University. His core area of specialization is Human Resource Management. Besides, he has expertise in the field of accounting also. Professor Khan has been the Chairman, Department of Commerce, AMU and Dean, Faculty of Commerce, AMU, Aligarh in the recent past. He has authored 8 books, and published more than 75 research papers in the reputed national and international Peer Reviewed/Indexed in journals Scopus, ISI and ABDC. He teaches course on HRM at both UG and PG level courses.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 25 October 2024 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.

Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup. It will have the logos of AMU and INI.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
