ABOUT THE COURSE:
This course “Finance for Everyone” will enable the learners to equip them with the basic skills to become financially sound and achieve financial independence. The subject plays a vital role in equipping everyone with the skills to handle their income and expenses effectively and ensuring financial stability. Financially literate individuals are better prepared to handle unexpected expenses such as medical emergencies, job loss, or other crises through proper savings and insurance planning.

This course is designed to increase the awareness about various investment options (like mutual funds, fixed deposits, PPF, and NPS) that helps an individual to grow their wealth and secure their future, instead of relying solely on traditional saving methods. Financial literacy ensures they understand pensions, provident funds, and other retirement benefits, enabling them to live a stress-free retired life. The subject also plays a crucial role in managing the risk of increasing scams and frauds, and in understanding the need to be aware of safe financial practices, such as protecting personal information and avoiding fraudulent schemes.

Week 1:  Introduction to Financial planning and budgeting (Meaning and the importance of financial literacy) perquisites of financial literacy -level of education, numerical and communication ability. Role of financial education in achieving financial well-being, Constituents of financial system.

Week 2: Key concepts of personal finance – savings, investments, Borrowing, Income –expenses, Active & Passive income, instant and Delayed gratification, Inflation, time value of money, Need and Procedure of Financial planning

Week 3: Meaning and types of Banks, Various product and services offered by banks, Types of bank deposit account, formalities to open various types of accounts, PAN Card, Address proof, KYC norms, mobile app based services.

Week 4: Various types of loan offered by banks-educational loan, consumer durables loan, vehicle loan, housing loan, short term medium term, long term, microfinance, bank overdraft, cash credit, mortgage, reverse mortgage, hypothecation, pledge.

Week 5: Cashless banking, e –banking, ATM, Debit and Credit Cards, RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, Electronic Clearance System (ECS) Net banking and UPI, Digital wallets, Security and precautions against Ponzi schemes and online frauds, banking complaints and ombudsman scheme

Week 6: Investment In Securities Market -, Capital market- Primary and Secondary market & money market. Role of Financial market in the economy, stock market – NSE and BSE, operation related aspects and risk involved in investing in securities market, SEBI

Week 7: Investment in Mutual Funds – systematic investment plan (SIP) and its advantages. Insurance related products – Life insurance, Term Life Insurance, Endowment policies, Pension policies, ULIP, Health Insurance Plans, Pension, retirement planning, New pension Scheme (NPS), ETF.

Week 8: Introduction to basic tax structure in India for personal taxation, aspects of personal tax planning, Exemptions and Deductions for Individuals.

Week 9: Income tax return filing, e- filing, Tax Saving Schemes – Government schemes like National Saving Certificates, public provident fund, post office saving schemes, Equity Linked Saving Schemes, Retirement Benefits Scheme

Week 10: Basic concepts of stock market, Terms used in stock market – NIFTY, SENSEX, initial public offering (IPO), Follow- on public offering (FPO) Offer For Sale (OFS), Block Deal, Equity And Preference Shares ,debentures , bonus Shares ,debentures ,bonus share ,stock spilt, dividend and buy back of shares

Week 11: DEMAT Account, trading account, delivery instruction slips (DI slips), blue chip company, defensive stocks, Face Value, Market Value, Book Building Process, Market Capitalization. Market Sentiment – Bull and Bear Market.

Week 12: Pre-opening session, trading session, opening and closing price. Call option, put option, Hedging and risk management, Portfolio Diversification, holding period, trading mechanisms, tax on short term and long-term gains. Active v/s Index Funds Investing.

Instructor bio

Dr Vandana Sonker

Banaras Hindu University
Dr Vandana Sonker is working as an assistant professor in Faculty of Commerce, Banaras Hindu University since February 2014. She did her graduation and Post Graduation from Faculty of Commerce, Banaras Hindu University. She has done her research work on Logistics Management in India with special reference to Courier Services Industry from Faculty of Commerce and Management, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi.

At present she has 15 Publications in various national and International Journals, and one edited book entitled, Dynamics of Accounting and Finance: Innovative Concepts and Practices. She has completed one UGC sponsored minor project title ‘Value Addition Through Logistic Management (A Case Study of Organized Courier Services Companies)’, and one ICSSR sponsored minor project title ‘An Appraisal of Working of Microfinance Institution in Uttar Pradesh’. She has also been contributing to various conferences and seminars. Her specialization areas are Accounting, Finance and Marketing.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 25 October 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup. It will have the logos of INI and BHU.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
