ABOUT THE COURSE:
Research in Tourism and Hospitality Management is gaining attention from academics and market researchers alike. Its interdisciplinary nature attracts individuals from various fields, including Engineering, Management, and Humanities. However, many students and practitioners face challenges during the research process.
This course aims to balance theoretical content and the application side of research methodology for Tourism and Hospitality Management. It offers a step-by-step learning approach, featuring discipline-specific discussions, sharing of personal research experiences, and briefings on relevant software and AI tools. This structured format will help learners effectively apply research methods in their own work.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This course benefits students pursuing Tourism and Hospitality Management at UG/PG/PhD level. The content also aids UGC-JRF/NET aspirants in understanding Research Methodology.

PREREQUISITES(PREFERABLE): Knowledge of Tourism/Hospitality/Hotel Management at various levels (UG/PG/PhD).

Course layout

Week 1: Introduction to research in Tourism & Hospitality: Featured research areas in THM, research process, nature of research, generating research idea, formulating research topic, research philosophy, research design, designing a research proposal, ethical issues in research.

Week 2: Qualitative Research: History and development, essential features, Ethnography, Phenomenology, Grounded Theory, Case Study, Ethnomethodology, Symbolic Interaction, Semiotics, designing qualitative studies.

Week 3: Quantitative Research: Research process- key features, Exploratory, Descriptive and Explanatory Research, common practices in quantitative research, designing quantitative researches - Mixed Method research.

Week 4: Review of literature: Why it is important- Doing a literature review- Sources of literature, PRISMA, SPAR4SLR, writing literature review, types of review, scoping, meta-analysis, bibliometrics, use of AI tools in literature review.

Week 5: Population and sampling, sampling types, primary data methods of data collection (qualitative-interview, focus group discussion, participatory research), conducting interviews, field notes, transcription, checklist for interviews and GDs, evaluating the quality of qualitative research.

Week 6: Qualitative Data Analysis: Nature of Qualitative Data, Components of Qualitative data analysis, Data exploration, coding, jottings, memos, data analysis, meaning making, Methods of evaluation, Spradely’s semantic relationships, Methods of explaining, visualization of results.

Week 7: Quantitative Data Analysis: Preparing the scheme of analysis, significance testing, Data Cleaning, Cross tabulation, Non-Parametric tests- Chi-Square Mc Nemar’s Test, Cochran’s Q Test, Mann Whitney U Test, Wilcoxon Singed Rank Test, Kruskal Wallis Test, Freidman Test, Parametric tests- t tests, One Way ANOVA, Correlation and Regression.

Week 8: Introduction to Exploratory Factor Analysis, Cluster Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Structural Equation Modelling. Scholarly writing, writing articles for journals, thesis writing, referencing styles.

Dr. Shyju P J

Banaras Hindu University
Dr. Shyju P J is an Associate Professor in Tourism Management in the Department of History of Art, Banaras Hindu University. He has been teaching at PG course (MTTM) and supervising Ph.D. Scholars in Tourism research in the Department. He has published research articles in leading journals and contributed to ePG Pathshala (PG course), contributed units for IGNOU (UG and PG courses), and unit for CBSE (10+2 level). His research interest include Cultural Tourism, Tourism Education, Sustainable Development of Tourism and Visitor Experience Management.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: April 25, 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.
Registration url: Announcements will be made when the registration form is open for registrations.
The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup.It will have the logos of INI and BHU.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
