ABOUT THE COURSE:
Urdu is a vital language with a rich cultural heritage, spoken by millions of people worldwide. Its significance extends beyond its native speakers, as it plays a crucial role in promoting cultural understanding, literature, and education. it is a symbol of Indic culture and heritage, with a history dating back to the 1000 years. It has been a medium for education and literary and poetic expressions. Urdu literature is a treasure trove of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction works, offering insights into the human experience, social issues, and cultural norms. The language has produced some of the most iconic literary works in the Indian subcontinent.
These are the linguistic aspects or levels of Urdu language:
Phonology: Urdu has a unique sound system, with 44 consonant phonemes and 10 to 12 vowel phonemes, including diphthongs. It uses a combination of Arabic, Persian, Turkish and indigenous Indian sounds with distinctive set of retroflex and aspirated consonants, such as ڑ , ڈ and بھ، پب، تھ، ڈھ، ڑھ etc.
Morphology: Urdu is an agglutinative language, with a system of suffixes, infixes and prefixes that attach to Perso-Aabic and Indic roots to form words.
Syntax: Urdu has a subject-object-verb (SOV) word order. It uses a system of case markers to indicate grammatical relationships.
Semantics and Lexicon: Urdu vocabulary is derived from a combination of sources, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and indigenous Indian languages. It has a large number of loanwords from Arabic and Persian, particularly in fields such as literature, poetry, and Islamic studies. Urdu has a distinctive set of idiomatic expressions and proverbs.
Script/ Writing System: Urdu is written in the Nastaliq script, which is a modified version of the Persian script. The Nastaliq script is written from right to left. Urdu has a unique set of diacritical marks, which are used to indicate vowel sounds and other phonetic features.
Dialects: Urdu has several dialects, which vary depending on the region and social context. Some of the main dialects of Urdu include: Dkani, Bambaiya, Bhopali, Kalkatiya, Lahori Urdu etc.
Language Contact: Urdu has been influenced by many other languages, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and English. It has also influenced many other languages, particularly in the Indian subcontinent. Urdu is an important language of communication in many parts of the world, particularly in Pakistan, India, and other countries with Urdu-speaking populations.
