ABOUT THE COURSE:
The course aims to provide an overview of various dimensions of the business environment and some framework to analyze it. It seeks to familiarize the students with various aspects of India's economic, social, political, and cultural environment. It intends to provide a deeper understanding of the environmental factors influencing business enterprises. The course also highlights the legal framework in the Indian context such as the contract law, companies law, cyber to name a few. The course will have a pragmatic view on applying the knowledge in the real life situation.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: B.Com., BBA/BBM, M.Com. MBA, BALLB, BBA LLB, Integrated BBA-MBA students

PREREQUISITES: Preferably, the students should have completed a Higher Secondary School Certificate

Course layout

Week 1: Introduction: Concept, Characteristics, dimensions, and relevance of the Business environment. Types of environments: internal and external environments, micro and macro environments.

Week 2: Frameworks for Analyzing Business Environment: Analyzing Business Environment- Environmental Scanning, strategic intent analysis, Analyzing internal and external environment using SWOT analysis, PESTEL/STEPIN/STEPLEDIGS frameworks. SAP-LAP framework, Industry analysis, and Value chain analysis.

Week 3: Global Environment: Globalization & its impact on Indian Economy- Meaning & levels of globalization, Reasons and approaches with which nations and firms go global.

Week 4: Economic Environment-I: Economic development and sectoral analysis, Analyzing economic policies- monetary policy, fiscal policy, and industrial policy.

Week 5: Economic Environment-II- Trade Policy – Economic Development and role of government – Privatization, disinvestment, Public Systems Management, Economic planning and NITI Aayog.

Week 6: Socio-cultural Environment: Salient features of Indian society – demographics, class/caste and varna structure of Indian society, Secularism in Indian Society, Rural – Urban differences, family structures, Business participation in social & cultural affairs, Size & growth rate of population, Age structure of population, Demographic dividend & its impact on business & growth. Effects of Society and Culture on Business, Social Responsibility and Business.

Week 7: Technological Environment:
Technology and Competitive Advantage. The changing technological environment in India, in-house R&D in Indian Industries, differences in the levels of science and technology across countries, Industrial revolutions (Industry 1.0 to 5.0 and beyond), and business implications of the technological environment.

Week 8: Natural or Ecological Environment- Environmental protection & sustainable Industrial development, Triple Bottom Line and sustainability, Environmental Degradation, Environmental policy, EMS Standard, ISO 14000, and Environmental Auditing.

Week 9: Political and Legal Environment: Basic tenets of the Indian Constitution, Review of functions of political institutions in India- Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary, their influence on Indian Business, centre-state relationships, evolving role of state /government and business Implications.

Week 10: Legal Aspects of Business-I: The Law of Contract, 1872, The Consumer Protection Act, and Cyber Law.

Week 11: Legal Aspects of Business-II: The Sale of Goods Act, 1830, and The Partnership Act, 1932.

Week 12: Legal Aspects of Business-III:
The Companies Act, 2013, The Competition Law.

Instructor bio

Dr. Arun Kumar Deshmukh

Banaras Hindu University
Dr. Arun Kumar Deshmukh has been an Assistant Professor of Marketing and Supply Chain at the Institute of Management Studies, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India, since 2019. Previously, he worked with IIM Lucknow, BHU, Manipal University, and Jaypee University, Noida. Before moving to academics, Dr. Deshmukh also worked with Bajaj Electricals, Malayala Manorama, and Dainik Bhaskar. He has earned a Ph.D. in Management from FMS-BHU, an Executive graduation from IIM Calcutta, and an FDPM from IIM Indore. He has over fifteen years of experience in academics, research, and industry. He has received three national-level doctoral fellowships: UGC-JRF, SRF, and ICSSR-National Doctoral Research Fellowship. He has conducted several research workshops/FDPs, and MDPs for practitioners.

His research and teaching interests include marketing, consumer buying behavior, business environment, public policy, sustainability, demand and supply chain management, and research methods. He has worked on several funded research and consultancy projects as PI/CoPI/Associate from global and national bodies, including the World Bank, ICAR, ICSSR, and the Ministry of Education, as well as local government bodies. His notable consulting clients include the Government of Rajasthan, Jaypee Cement, and VSCL. He has more than 40 publications (journal, cases, and chapters) to his credit, some notable papers being published in Scopus/WoS Q1, ABDC-A, and ABS-ranked journals such as Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, Global Journal of Flexible Systems Management, and Marketing Intelligence and Planning, to name a few. He received best paper awards at various national and global fora. Recently, he presented his research at international forums, including the American Marketing Association (AMA) Winter Academic Conference in Phoenix, Arizona (2025), the Florida conference in the USA (2024), and the INDAM conferences in India. He is an academic member of professional global bodies, including the American Marketing Association (AMA), the American Council of Consumer Interests (ACCI), and the ISMCDM. He is an avid learner.

Course certificate

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 1000/- (Rupees one thousand only).
Date and Time of Exams: 24 October 2025 Morning session 9am to 12 noon; Afternoon Session 2pm to 5pm.

The online registration form has to be filled and the certification exam fee needs to be paid. More details will be made available when the exam registration form is published. If there are any changes, it will be mentioned then.

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 25% of average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=10/25 AND EXAM SCORE >= 30/75. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup. It will have the logos of INI and BHU.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
