Understanding Literary Genres and Devices

This 8-week course introduces learners to the foundational concepts of literary studies. We begin with an exploration of literature and its genres, then delve into prose, essays, fiction, poetry, and drama examining their forms and techniques. Literary devices that span across genres are discussed to enhance analytical skills. The final week deals with Practical Criticism which enables learners to integrate all learning while analysing a text.

Instructor bio

Dr Manjari Jhunjhunwala

Vasanta College for Women, BHU

Manjari Jhunjhunwala was born and brought up in Varanasi and did her post graduation in English Literature with Banaras Hindu University Gold Medal and received  her Ph.D in 2009 for the thesis topic Cultural Aspects of Nissim Ezekiel's Poetry. She joined Vasanta College for Women Rajghat Varanasi  in 2006 and was elevated to Professorship in 2021. She heads the department of English in the college since 2015. She teaches British Literature, Indian Literature in English, Linguistics and Women Writing. She is the  Coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college since 2023 and member of Managing Committee and Editorial Board of the journal Vasantasahastradhara of the college since 2017. She is coordinator of PG diploma in Gender and Women's Studies running in college as per BHU. Her two books “Cultural Aspects of  Nissim Ezekiel’s Poetry” and  “Cultural Studies in Contemporary Fiction” are published from Europe. She has one research scholar working under her and is in the interview panel of Sampoornanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi  and had been the resource person in Conferences in Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth. She has extreme reverence for Sanskrit and Sanskriti of Kashi.



Dr Vishal Singh

Dr. Vishal Singh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Vasanta College for Women, Rajghat, Varanasi, where he has been serving since 2024. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), with a research focus on the Representations of Disability in Select Indian Fiction and Films. Dr. Singh also earned his M.A. in English and B.Ed. from BHU, further strengthening his academic foundation. Before joining Vasanta College, he worked as a Research Associate in the Department of English at BHU, contributing to various scholarly and academic initiatives. His areas of interest include disability studies, film and literature, and contemporary Indian writing in English.

The course is free to enroll and learn from. But if you want a certificate, you have to register and write the proctored exam conducted by us in person at any of the designated exam centres.
The exam is optional for a fee of Rs 750/- (Rupees Seven Hundred and Fifty only).

CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE

Average assignment score = 30% of average of best 6 assignments out of the total 8 assignments given in the course.
Exam score = 70% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100

Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

Please note that assignments encompass all types (including quizzes, programming tasks, and essay submissions) available in the specific week.

YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A CERTIFICATE ONLY IF AVERAGE ASSIGNMENT SCORE >=12/30 AND EXAM SCORE >= 28/70. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >= 40/100.

Certificate will have your name, photograph and the score in the final exam with the breakup. It will have the logos of INI and BHU.

Only the e-certificate will be made available. Hard copies will not be dispatched.
