TS-5: Ecology, Environment and Tourism is a 08 Credits Course offered in the BTS programme of the School, i.e. School of Tourism and Hospitality Services Management, IGNOU. The course consists of 09 blocks and 31 Units.

As the name of the course suggests, this course is about the interlinkage between environment and tourism.

We now understand that the protection of the environment while developing tourism is a challenge. It is pertinent that we concern ourselves with the ecological stress upon tourism development and tread carefully to ensure that environmental degradation from reckless growth of tourism is checked. This course reflects upon these changing concerns.

In this course we will discuss and learn the measures by which the Adverse effect on the ecology and environment, specially due to tourism can be checked and averted, while at the same time ensuring that the overall tourism quality and experience is improved.

Instructor bio

Prof. Paramita Suklabaidya

Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi
Prof. Paramita Suklabaidya is Professor in Tourism Management and presently serving as the Director of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Services Management (SOTHSM), IGNOU.
She is an alumnus of Delhi University and Lucknow University. She is NET- JRF awardee and has her PhD Degree from Lucknow University (2008). She has more than 20 years of teaching experience. Prior to IGNOU she was teaching as an Assistant Professor in Banaras Hindu University (BHU). She was also associated as Lecturer with IITTM, Gwalior and Tagore Arts College, Pondicherry.
She has presented papers 40 papers in National and International Seminars and Conferences; and has published 20 research papers in National and International Tourism Journals. She has also co – authored chapters in edited books (03), CBSE books on Tourism (06) and in IGNOU SLM (20).
She was a Member of the committee constituted by CBSE for revising the existing course curriculum on Travel and Tourism as well as a Member of the committee constituted by AICTE on National Vocational Education Qualification Framework (NVEQF) for various levels in the field of Tourism Sector.
Area of interest includes Food Tourism, Heritage Tourism, Tourism Marketing, Special Interest Tourism, Event Management, Cruises and Crisis Management in Tourism.
She is involved in the development of TS-2 Course (Tourism Development: Products, Operations and Case Studies) and TS – 5 Course (Ecology, Environment and Tourism) for the Online courses and Programmes of the University.
