Library, Information and Society is the first course in the BLIS programme. It sets the context for other courses providing the base to understand and develop competence in the other courses. It introduces you to the role and importance of library and other information institutions in the society. Library and information related legislation is discussed in detail which is an important component in providing service according to norms. Library networks and consortia that form the basis of resource sharing are also the part of the course. Library needs support from organisations for its development and functioning. Prof. Jaideep Sharma

Indira Gandhi National Open University
Prof. Jaideep Sharma is a professor in the Faculty of Library and Information Science (LIS). He has a prior experience of working in the face-to-face mode of teaching for 14 years before joining IGNOU in the year 2003. Prof. Sharma has a doctoral degree in the area of Professional Competencies and Education for LIS in India. His area of specialization is Information Processing and Retrieval. Currently, he is also working as University librarian of IGNOU.
