INDIAN CULTURE: PERSPECTIVE FOR TOURISM is a 08 Credits course. This course is divided into 9 blocks having 31 units. All these blocks and units will be covered in 80 videos of Swayam platform. This course attempts to provide an integral view of Indian culture from the perspective of the tourism sector. The culture, thus, has been taken to mean an interface between subjectivity and its representation. This course is useful for those learners who are willing to know Indian heritage, culture, tradition, art, architecture, music, dance, drama, fair, festivals, theatre, Indian cinema, different types of Indian costumes and crafts, tribal society and government perspectives. In this course Block 1 introduces you to the basics of Indian culture, its foundation, historical perspectives, meaning and spread. It also elaborated the use of conservation and how culture is interrelated to the travel and tourism industry. Block 2 gives understanding about social structure, customs, rituals, fairs and festivals. Block 3 is devoted to fine arts like dance, music, paintings etc. Block 4 elaborated on Indian cinema and theatre. After that we will move to discuss Architecture, Archaeology and Antiquity. The same is dealt in Block 5 and 6. Block 7 is devoted to handicrafts like clay, stone, wood, metal, ivory, corals, gems, jewellery, textiles and costumes. Block 8 and 9 gives understanding of tribal society and its identity formation. It also elaborated on government policy, trade and media.

Instructor bio

Dr. Arvind Kumar

SOTHSM, IGNOU
Dr. Arvind Kumar Dubey is UGC-NET qualified and Ph.D in Tourism Management. He has 21 years of total teaching experience including nearly 10 years of teaching experience at Indraprastha University’s affiliated Government of Delhi’s (Department of Higher Education) institute named Delhi Institute of Heritage Research & Management (Post-Graduate level). He has published 43 research papers/articles/book chapters; five edited books, 6 IGNOU books (blocks) and presented nearly 40 papers at National/ International Conferences / Seminars etc. He has also chaired/co-chaired/ acted as resource person in at least 20 conferences/conventions/workshops/seminars etc. He has delivered nearly 12 lectures as Invited Talk, Keynote Speaker and Guest Speaker etc at different Universities. He has designed nearly 10 new curricula and courses related to tourism and hospitality. He has developed 10 Modules of MOOCs on 4 quadrant basis and written/edited 10 MOOCs Modules. Three PhD have been awarded and 4 research scholars are presently working under him. He (as faculty) taught two papers related to Heritage Tourism Management at Postgraduate Level i.e. Master of Archaeology and Heritage Management and Master of Conservation, Preservation and Heritage Management (2 years course each) at DIHRM, Govt. of NCT Delhi. He is Managing Editor at Global Journal of Enterprise Information System (e- journal, Print Journal), GJEIS (www.ejournal.co.in/gjeis/index.php/). His area of interest lies in Heritage Tourism Management, Sustainable Tourism Development, Integrated Planning, Marketing, Geography of Tourism and Tourism Impact. He was Programme Coordinator of CTS, DTS, BHM, MHA, EMBAHM, MIHM and B.Sc in Fashion Design Programmes. As a Programme Coordinator he is currently involved in revision/development of tourism courses related CBCS, B.A (Vocational Studies) Tourism Management, BTS and developing TS-2 Course (Tourism Development: Products, Operations and Case Studies) & TS 4 Indian Culture: Perspective for Tourism: online and on MOOCs. He is Course Coordinator of 14 Courses related to BTS, MTTM/MTA and BAVTM (CBCS), MHA.
