The Urdu poetic tradition is an emblem of the rich cultural and literary heritage of South Asia. Entwined with the development of the language itself, and at the same time taking it forward, Urdu poetry has a rich history of evolution from its earliest days around the thirteenth and fourteenth century to present times. This course aims to introduce students to the major forms of poetry in the Urdu literary tradition, as well as the works of contemporary poets who have written or are writing in these forms. Thus, through the course, learners will learn about the early history of Urdu Poetry, and engage with Ghazal, Nazm, Masnavi, Qaseeda, Marsiya, and Rubayi, the major forms of Urdu poetry. The students will be able to get the larger picture of Urdu poetry as a whole and will also be acquainted with a diverse range of poets the Urdu tradition flaunts, including major classic poets such as Wali Dakni, Nazir Akbar Abadi, Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib, and Contemporary Poets such as Iqbal, Majaz, Faiz, Rashid, Sardar Jaffri, Kaifi Azami, and others.

Instructor bio

Dr. Liaqat Ali

Indira Gandhi National Open University

Dr Liaqat Ali is an Assistant Professor of Urdu at the School of Humanities in Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. He hails from a far flung hamlet in Jammu and Kashmir. He started his basic education from his native village. He did his graduation from University of Jammu. His thirst for knowledge and education brought him to Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where did his Master in Urdu. He has accomplished his doctorate in Urdu under the leadership and supervision of Prof. Khawaja Mohd. Ekramuddin, Centre of Indian Languages (CIL) School of Languages, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS), JNU, New Delhi.

His area of specialization is critical study of Urdu fiction, comparative literature study and contemporary Urdu literature in Jammu and Kashmir. His four books entitled “Tehqeeqi Wa Tanqeedi Khazain”, “Jammu Wa Kashmir Mein Urdu Adab 2000 se 2013”, “Irtekaz-E-Nazar”, “Harf Harf Justju” are published. His more than twenty research papers published in various reputed Journals and Magazines. He presented more than thirty research papers in National and International Seminars/Conferences and participated in workshops.

Prior to joining IGNOU, he was working in Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu with 4.10 (Four year Ten months) Teaching experience.
