This 12-week,
4-credit course is designed for four-year degree students and other learners
interested in learning Kannada. It begins with basics like Kannada script,
phonetics, greetings, and daily conversations. The course progresses through grammar essentials,
vocabulary building, and listening practice, then advances to reading
comprehension and writing skills. Participants explore Kannada literature,
practice speaking in various settings, and learn about Kannada culture. The
course concludes with a review and final assessment covering listening,
speaking, reading, and writing skills, with reflection on their language
learning journey and future goals.

Dr. Rakesh Cherucodu
Dr. Rakesh Cherucodu holds an MA in Malayalam from the
University of Kerala, obtained in 2007, and an MA in Linguistics from Annamali
University, completed in 2021. He earned his PhD in 2015 from the University of
Kerala, focusing on the influence of colonialism in cultural spaces. He
qualified the NET and JRF conducted by UGC in 2007. Currently, Dr. Rakesh
Cherucodu serves as a lecturer and the Principal In Charge of SRLC at the
Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysuru.
Dr. Rakesh Cherucodu has authored three books on literary and cultural
criticism and has edited several others, including "Keralapaniniyam:
Readings & Representations," "Kerala Land & Culture,"
and "Balaramayana." He has contributed over 30 articles to research
journals and popular periodicals. Additionally, he has delivered more than 50
lectures and paper presentations at national and international seminars and
conferences.
Dr.
Vijayalakshmi A. Patil currently serves as a Resource Person in Kannada at
SRLC, CIIL, Mysuru. With over 25 years of experience in teaching Kannada as a
second language to diverse groups of learners, she has dedicated her career to
language education and material development.
Her contributions include creating instructional
materials for both second and first language learners, developing language
laboratory resources, and designing graded learning materials tailored to
varied learner needs. Dr. Patil is passionate about empowering students to
unlock their linguistic potential and enhance their communication skills with
confidence. Her professional experience reflects her commitment to language
education.
In addition to her teaching expertise, Dr. Patil specializes in linguistics
and translation. She has actively participated in and conducted numerous
workshops focused on language teaching methodologies and linguistics,
showcasing her commitment to advancing language education.
Dr. Srinivasa (Instructor)
Dr. Srinivasa currently serves as a Resource Person in Kannada at SRLC, CIIL, Mysuru. With a strong academic foundation, he holds an M.A. in Linguistics, an M.A. in Kannada, a Ph.D. in Linguistics, and Post-Doctoral Research in Linguistics. In addition, he has earned a Diploma in Film Direction (DFD) and has created numerous documentaries and short films. Dr. Srinivasa is a multifaceted professional, with expertise in teaching yoga and holding a Bachelor of Library Science degree. He has also completed a Diploma in Tamil and a Certificate Course in Malayalam while working at SRLC.
With
9 years of experience teaching Kannada as a second language to diverse groups
of learners, Dr. Srinivasa has developed advanced teaching materials such as
the Advanced Course Reader in Kannada. His contributions include
creating graded instructional materials that cater to the varied needs of
learners, integrating both language and literature. His professional experience
reflects his commitment to language education.
Chetan S. Baji (Instructor)
He
has also contributed to the Karnataka University Dialect Survey project as a
Research Assistant in 2010 and recently worked as a Freelance Kannada Editor
with Oxford University Press (Aug 2022 – Jan 2023), contributing to dictionary
development projects.
Mr.
Baji's technical expertise includes phonetic transcription, transliteration,
translation, content creation, and event organization, with proficiency in
Microsoft Office tools. Fluent in Kannada, English, and Hindi, he brings strong
linguistic expertise to his work.
Varshaa T. Naik (Instructor)
Varshaa
has presented and published impactful research papers, including “A
sociolinguistic overview on representation of class in rom-com genre Kannada
cinema” and "Catchphrases in mainstream Kannada cinema and its influence
on youth: a sociolinguistic study.” Both were presented at the XIV National
Sociology Conference held at Kuvempu University, Shivamogga, where she won the
"Best Paper Award" for her insightful analysis of class
representation in Kannada cinema. She actively engages in academic workshops
Seminars and confrences
She
has worked as a Junior Resource Person in the Bharatavani project. She has also
provided simultaneous interpretation from English and Hindi to Kannada at over
20 seminars for a private company across Karnataka. Varshaa also served as an
ESL teacher at an NGO, Mysore, where she designed lesson plans tailored to help
Kannada speakers overcome challenges in learning English grammar,
pronunciation, and vocabulary.
In
addition to her academic achievements, Varshaa combines her passion for
linguistics with film making. As the Founder, Producer, and Writer at Meeraa
Films, she produced the award-winning Kannada feature film Jagave
Naataka Ranga, which received the "Yellow Rose Award" at the
16th Jaipur International Film Festival in 2024. Her work in film making
reflects her dedication to story telling that integrates cultural and
linguistic depth.
Varshaa’s multifaceted expertise
bridges the realms of academics, linguistics, and creative expression,
reflecting her dedication to advancing Kannada language studies and preserving
its cultural essence.
