BUDAE-182: Study of Urdu Progressive Poetry

By Dr Liaqat Ali   |   Indira Gandhi National open University
Learners enrolled: 22

"Progressive Urdu Poetry" is a rich and revolutionary genre that emerged as a response to social injustices and the quest for equality in early 20th-century South Asia. Rooted in the Progressive Writers' Movement, this poetry captures themes of social reform, human rights, and the struggles of the common person, aiming to inspire change and highlight societal inequalities. Blending powerful emotional appeal with social commentary, Progressive Urdu poetry resonates deeply with those confronting issues of poverty, oppression, and inequality.

This course delves into both classical and contemporary works by notable progressive Urdu poets, offering insight into the movement’s origins, its philosophical undertones, and the profound impact of these voices on literature and society. Through studying this genre, students will gain a deeper understanding of social justice themes in Urdu poetry, enhance their analytical skills, and explore the ways literature can shape and reflect social attitudes and awareness of contemporary issues.
