BME-025: Condition Monitoring and Maintenance Management

This course “Condition Monitoring and Maintenance Management” comprises of three modules and ten chapters will be covered in eight weeks. 

The Module 1: Maintenance Concepts, deals with functions and objectives of maintenance, maintenance strategies, maintenance scheduling and organization and spare parts management and also deals with various methods and policies of maintenance engineering. 

Module 2: Condition Based Maintenance, describes the methods of fault diagnosis, condition checking and inspection and trend monitoring methods. This module also explains various methods of machine fault identification and its diagnosis.

Module 3: Reliability Centered Maintenance, discusses about maintenance division models, reliability oriented maintenance systems, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Benchmarking. Finally it concludes with procedures of JIT maintenance, zero defect maintenance and zero breakdown maintenance systems.

N. Venkateshwarlu is Associate Professor, School of Engineering and Technology, IGNOU, New Delhi. He attained his PhD in Total Quality Management (2014) from SOET, IGNOU, New Delhi. He did his M.Tech. in Industrial Engineering and Management (1996) from JNTU, Hyderabad. He did his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (1989) from University College of Engineering, Osmania University. He also completed his PG Diploma programmes from IGNOU in three disciplines such as Distance Education, Operations Management, Urban Planning and Development while in service. He shows keen interest in learning new things in education, in this endeavour, he completed two online MOOCs courses  through courseera.com and gained “Certificate in Urban Infrastructure Management-Part-I” in 2017 and “ Certificate in Smart Cities: Management of Smart Urban Infrastructure” in 2018.

During 1997 to till date he designed, developed and launched a 98 credits programme on “ Diploma in Mechanical Engineering(DME)” during 2006 to 2010 as Programme coordinator. He also developed around 32 credit course materials for B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering programme and Diploma in Mechanical Engineering programmes as course coordinator. At present he is developing a new and innovative programme on “Diploma in Smart City Development and Management (DSCDM)” in online mode and ODL mode as programme coordinator. The work is in progress.

During 1990-97, he served in a state govt. company called Allwyn Watches Limited, Hyderabad as Asst. Engineer; Case Assembly and was responsible for day to production of case assembly shop floor. He also suggested few indigenous materials for substitution of imported materials which reduced the cost of materials. After  five years’ service, he had been promoted as Asst. Manager for Machine Shop floor and taken responsibility as Shift In charge for production of machining parts. He effectively managed the shift production on Automated CNC machines and general lathe, milling and drilling machines.  He also worked as Asst. Manager, Industrial Engineering Department to establish time standards in the machine shop floor operations. He could able to manage the shop floor productions effectively by maintaining good relationships. He was always tried for improving the quality of materials by implementing statistical quality control methods at shop floors.

His research interests centres primarily on improving the quality of manufacturing products, and increasing the efficiency of processes, machines and manpower. He also published more research papers on Distance Education, Industrial Engineering and Management and Total Quality Management. He has about 29 publications to his credit which includes research articles, conference presented papers, research papers in journals etc;. 

He received a Gold Medal for his Research Paper on “Make in India” presented at Industrial Engineering Conference held at NIT Surat in collaboration with IIIE, Mumbai in 2015.

In IGNOU, he prepared 32 Credits of SLM for various ODL programmes. He was coordinating Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DME) programme from 2006 to 2019, Currently he is developing a Diploma in Smart City Development and Management. CRITERIA TO GET A CERTIFICATE


30 Marks will be allocated for Internal Assessment (Final Quiz- Mandatory) which will be available at the end of the course and 70 Marks will be allocated for end term proctored examination.


A  minimum of 40% passing marks (i.e. at-least 12 marks in Internal Assessment (Final Quiz- Mandatory) & 28 Marks in external proctored examination) will be required for being eligible for SWAYAM Certificate.
