After completion of this course, the participant will be able to

  2. Write and debug programs in Embedded-C language for microcontroller-based systems.

  3. Design and implement embedded systems using microcontrollers for specific applications.

Course Layout

Week 1: Introduction to 8051 Microcontroller

Difference between Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, History of development of Microcontrollers, Applications of Microcontrollers, Architecture of 8051, Criteria for choosing Microcontrollers. 


Week 2: Programming Languages of 8051

Pin Diagram of 8051, Programming Languages of 8051- Machine Language, Assembly language, Embedded C Language.


Week 3: Embedded C Programming of 8051 

Various Data Types used for C programming- Char, Int, Sbit data types, C Programs using various data types, I/O programming in 8051 C. 


Week 4: 8051 Timers

Timer 0 and Timer 1 registers, TMOD register, Programming 8051 Timers in C, Keil Compiler.


Week 5:  PLC

Introduction to PLC, Block Diagram of PLC, PLC hardware components, I/O section Analog I/O Section Analog I/O modules, digital I/O modules, CPU processor, memory module.


Week 6:   Instruction Set of PLC

Basic Instructions, Relay Instructions, Timer Instructions, Counter Instructions, Sequencing Instructions, Comparison Instructions, Arithmetic Instructions


Week 7:  PLC programming using Ladder Logic

Ladder Logic Programming based on Basic Instructions, Relay Instructions, Timer Instructions, Counter Instructions, Sequencing Instructions, Comparison Instructions, Arithmetic Instructions

 

Week 8: Practicals on Allen Bradley based Universal PLC Platform  

Demonstration of Practicals on Allen Bradley based Universal PLC Platform using various instructions.

Dr Ritula Thakur

National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chandigarh

Having obtained B.Tech Degree in Honors in 2002, M.E degree in Distinction in 2004 and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering in 2016, Dr. Ritula Thakur is presently working as Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of NITTTR, Chandigarh and has work experience of over 19 years mainly teaching at postgraduate level. Her work experience comprises of imparting training in latest cutting edge areas to teachers of Engineering Colleges, Polytechnics & Industry Professionals, teaching M.E. in Electrical Engineering. Dr. Thakur has worked as visiting scholar in National Peanut Research Laboratory, Dawson and Richard Russell Research Laboratory, USDA, Athens (USA). She is also involved in development of Curriculum in Electrical Engineering for technical institutions and has developed Technical Instructional materials in the form of manuals and videos. She has worked on energy-efficient LED designing project for streetlights for Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. For the project, MC Chandigarh received National Energy Conservation Award from Bureau of Energy Efficiency. With this, the city saved 13.02 million units of energy annually and reduced its power bills from Rs 14 crore per year to Rs 8 crore and annual reduction of 10,543 metric tonne of carbon foot prints. Having experience of organising International Conference on Recent Advances in Electrical Engineering twice at her Institute, Dr. Ritula is also working at various administrative levels such as National Board of Accreditation (NBA) Coordinator for department’s M.E program, member of various committees of Institute. She is an excellent orator and has been invited as expert/guest of honour/ keynote speaker/session chair to various National/International forums/Conferences. Dr. Thakur has developed the Centre of Excellence in Hardware in Loop mainly in collaboration with Typhoon HIL, Switzerland and Opal RT. Her research interests include mainly Micro Grid and Smart Grid, Real Time modelling & Simulation of Power Systems, Embedded systems and Microcontrollers, Power Systems, PLC and SCADA, Sensors and Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in Agriculture, IoT and AI in Precision Agriculture, Quality Analysis and Detection Technology in Food Materials. Dr. Thakur has successfully coordinated three MOOCS Courses in SWAYAM portal, an initiative of Ministry of Education, Govt. of India in the area of Smart Grid. She has guided around 200 M.E students, one Phd student and is presently guiding 3 Ph.D students. She possesses strong research acumen as she has published more than 200 research papers in National/International Journals and Conferences and one book by Springer.

Course certificate

Grading Policy:

 

- Internal Assignment Score: This accounts for 30% of the final grade and is calculated based on the average of the best three assignments out of all the assignments given in the course.

- Final Proctored Exam Score: This makes up 70% of the final grade and is derived from the proctored exam score out of 100.

- Final Score: The final score is the sum of the average assignment score and the exam score.

 

Eligibility for Certification:

 

- To qualify for a certificate, you must achieve an average assignment score of at least 10 out of 30, and an exam score of at least 30 out of 70. If one of the 2 criteria is not met, you will not get the certificate even if the Final score >=40/100.

Certificate Details:

 

- The certificate will include your name, photograph, roll number, and the percentage score from the final exam. It will also feature the logos of the Ministry of Education, SWAYAM, and NITTTR.

- Certificate Format: Only electronic certificates (e-certificates) will be issued; hard copies will not be dispatched.
