Applied Physics-I

By Dr. A. Padma Rekha   |   National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research, Chennai
Learners enrolled: 1126

The Applied Physics curriculum common to all branches of engineering provides a comprehensive foundation in classical mechanics, thermodynamics, and material properties. Applied Physics encompasses the study of a diverse array of topics related to the physical world around us. It aims to foster an understanding of this world through both observation and prediction of the behavior of objects. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of physical principles and analysis in various fields of engineering and technology. The course is designed to assist diploma students in applying basic concepts and principles to solve broad-based engineering problems and to comprehend different technology-based applications.

Unit 1 introduces fundamental concepts such as physical quantities, units, and measurement systems (FPS, CGS, SI), along with dimensional analysis for unit conversions and equation derivations.

Unit 2 delves into force and motion, covering scalar and vector quantities, laws of motion, conservation principles, and applications like rocket propulsion and banking of roads.

Unit 3 focuses on work, energy, and power, exploring concepts like friction, energy transformations, and power calculations.

Unit 4 examines rotational motion, including torque, angular momentum, and moment of inertia, with applications to rigid bodies.

Unit 5 addresses properties of matter, discussing elasticity, pressure, surface tension, viscosity, and fluid dynamics.

Unit 6 covers heat and thermometry, exploring heat transfer modes, temperature scales, and thermal expansion in solids, liquids, and gases. This curriculum equips students with essential physics concepts applicable across various engineering disciplines.
