Civil Engineering deals with the Planning, Analysis, Design, Drawing, Estimation, Construction and Maintenance of various structures. Structural Engineering, which focusses on analysis and design of structures, is one of the very important areas in the field of Civil Engineering. The primary goal of structural design is to ensure that buildings and structures are safe for people to use.
In general, design of structure involves the proportioning of different elements of the structure and detailing them in such a way that the structure will be able to resist all the loads that are likely to act on it during its service life, without excessive deformation or collapse. Such design should also be aesthetic, economical, durable, stable and sustainable.
The design of steel and reinforced concrete (RCC) structures is a critical aspect of civil engineering, as it directly impacts the safety, durability, and overall functionality of a building or infrastructure. Proper design ensures that structures can withstand various loads, including dead loads, live loads, wind loads, and seismic loads. Well-designed structures are less prone to collapse or significant damage, minimizing risks to human life and property. Moreover, efficient design minimizes material usage, reducing construction costs.
This course “Design of Steel and Reinforced Concrete (RCC) Structures” has been designed for the learners at Diploma level in Civil Engineering. At the diploma level, the focus on steel and RCC structure design is primarily on understanding the basic principles, code provisions, and practical applications. This course will clearly expose the learners to the fundamental concepts of the Limit State Design of the basic steel and concrete structural elements as per relevant Indian Standards.
