Hearty Welcome, learners; my name is Dr.Vinod Kumar Adigopula. I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research-Chennai. Transportation engineering is a specialized field of civil engineering that focuses on planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining transportation systems. These systems include roads, highways, railways, airports, seaports, and public transit networks, which facilitate the movement of people and goods. The field is critical in ensuring transportation infrastructure's efficiency, safety, and sustainability, directly impacting economic development, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. This course is designed exclusively for polytechnic students as well as polytechnic lectures.

·         Why do we require transportation engineering?

Transportation engineering plays a pivotal role in shaping the modern world. It's the discipline responsible for planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining transportation systems that enable the efficient and safe movement of people and goods.

·         How will transportation engineering be helpful for national economic development?

Transportation contributes to any country's economic, industrial, social and cultural development. It plays a vital role in the economic development of any region since every commodity produced, whether it is food, clothing, industrial products, or essential commodities, needs transport at all stages, from production to distribution. Efficient transportation systems are the backbone of economic growth. They enable goods to move quickly, reduce production and distribution costs, and improve market access. Well-designed infrastructure, like highways, railroads, airways and ports, supports commerce and attracts investment, contributing to a region’s economic competitiveness.

The main objective of this course is

1.      To offer a comprehensive introduction to transportation systems and the essential elements of each mode.

2.      To discuss basic principles of roadway design, including road geometry, alignment, traffic surveys, signage, and road markings.

3.      Differentiate between types of highway pavements, material selections and their construction and maintenance as per Indian Road Congress

4.       To be aware of the fundamental elements of Intelligent Transportation Systems to improve traffic management, reduce congestion, and enhance safety.
