Refrigeration and air conditioning are two interconnected fields of engineering that involve the control of temperature, humidity, and air quality to provide comfort, preserve goods, and enable industrial processes. They rely on principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics to operate efficiently. The course starts with the focus on Refrigeration which is the process of removing heat from a space or substance to lower its temperature and maintain it below the surrounding environment with the help of the key components such as the Compressor which Compresses the refrigerant to increase its pressure and temperature, Condenser that rejects heat from the refrigerant to the surroundings, turning it into a liquid, Expansion Valve that reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, lowering its temperature and Evaporator that Absorbs heat from the desired area, causing the refrigerant to evaporate and cool the space.  The course also comprises of modules on Air conditioning which is a process of controlling temperature, humidity, and air circulation to maintain comfort in indoor spaces encompassing residential, commercial, and industrial needs to provide cooling and, in some systems, heating. The air conditioning modules covers various units such as the Central Air Conditioning that provides cooling to large buildings through a duct network, Split Systems which has separate indoor and outdoor units for smaller spaces, Window Units which are compact systems that cool a single room and Heat Pumps that provide both cooling and heating by reversing the refrigeration cycle.

Thus the course on Refrigeration and air conditioning provides an insight into various refrigeration systems and equipments, refrigerants and lubricants, refrigerant flow controls, applications of refrigeration systems, air conditioning systems and tools used for Refrigeration and air conditioning.

Course outcomes:

At the end of the course the participants will be able to

  • Define refrigeration and types of  refrigeration cycles

  • Explain vapour compression and vapour absorption system working principles

  • Identify the components required for refrigeration system.

  • Identify the controlling components for a refrigeration system

  • Explain the working principle of air conditioning
