Week 1
In the 1st week, the students will only be dealing with the basic terms and concepts related to society and media and evolution of media within the society. The 1st unit will be an introduction to the basic terms and concepts related to the course “Society and Media”. The students will be exploring various introductory themes related to society as a social concept and media as an institution. The 1st unit will be the building block for students in analyzing the debates on society and media from a broader perspective.
Week 2
In the 2nd week, the students will only be dealing with the debates on socialization within society, the role of media in the process and the kind of language and popular culture being framed within the society through media. This will help in further understanding the core attributes necessary to understand the shaping of society through contemporary forms of media.
Week 3
In the 3rd week, the students will be engaging with digital media and the nature of participation being shaped by it and lastly the nature of emerging challenges that exist between society and media’s interaction.
Week 4
In the 4th week, the students will be dealing with more advance debates in comparison with the 1st unit. They will be introduced to the debates on the ideas of social change within the society and the role of media in the process. In addition to that, the students will also develop an understanding about the kind of stereotyping that is taking place within the society due to media and also the nature of convergence that is emerging. The 2nd unit of the course will be introducing the students to the debates on change within the society and the role which media plays as an institution. The students will be exposed to the discussions on understanding social change, the nature of convergence taking place within the society, the conflict between the dominant and alternative paradigms and the nature of intervention being placed in the process of change mediated by media.
Week 5
In the 5th week, the students will be engaging with the debates on the dominant and the alternative paradigms of change and the role of media in the process. In addition to that, the students will also be dealing with the notions of literacy and its shaping by media as an institution and its impact on overall societal change. It will help in widening the understanding of the student in terms of conflict of ideologies and the role media played in both the dominant and alternative spaces for participation and discussion.
Week 6
In the 6th week, the students will be dealing with the impact of digital media and social transformation and the nature of intervention that exists or is emerging due to the process of change brought about within the society by media. It will help the students in developing a critical understanding of how digital media is helping in social transformation in India and the nature of intervention media can provide for change.
Week 7
In the 7th week, the students will be dealing with the notions of margins and marginality which has emerged due to the process of change and the issues and challenges of the margins. The students will also understand the debates on regional versus religion based marginality and different forms of marginalization that exist within the society and the impact of media in highlighting the issues of marginality. In the 3rd unit, the students will be exposed to the idea of marginality and its linkage with change. The students will also develop an in-depth understanding of how media as an institution reflects upon the notion of marginality and the role it has played in terms of reflecting the issues of the margins and their projection within the society. The students will also be exposed to the critical debates on the idea of inclusion and exclusion and how the rights of the margins are addressed within the society and the media and societal based challenges that exist in regard to margins.
Week 8
In the 8th week, the students will be dealing with the debates on the mainstream culture, role of media and the issues of marginality. In addition to that, the students will also be engaging with notions of caste, class and identity and its correlation with marginality. Most importantly, the students from this week’s unit will develop an understanding about the ideas of inclusion and exclusion that exist within the society and the challenges it is creating within it.
Week 9
In the 9th week, the students will be dealing with debates on margins as the alternate voices and their issues in terms of their rights, the impact of media in highlighting their issues and the existing challenges within the society.
Week 10
In the 10th week, the students will be dealing with topic on gender and the changing notions of gender within the society and the role of media.
The students will also be dealing with how gender has a pivotal role to play in the process of development and how media can be an important institution in pushing for modern forms of change within the society. The 4th unit of the course will be specifically dealing with the debates on media, gender and society. The students in this unit will be engaging with the notions of gender and how it has evolved with time and the role media has played in projecting gender as a social category. The students will further develop an understanding of media, gender and culture and the shaping of gender based movements within the society. Lastly, the students will also develop an understanding of the contemporary issues emerging within gender and the nature of emphasis being provided by the contemporary media forms.
Week 11
In the 11th week, the students will be dealing with the debates on gender which are further complex in nature.
The students will be exposed to the issues of gender and representation within the society and media. The students will also be introduced to important gender based movements which have contributed to change within the society and the role of media in the process.
Week 12
In the 12th week, the students will be dealing with the debates on gender and culture and the contemporary issues and the placement of media in such social scenario.
The students will be introduced to the topic on media and youth development where the students will understand the notions of youth and how it has transformed within the society. The students will also be exposed to the idea of youth as a concept within society and how they have been perceived in terms of societal development. The students will further understand how media mediates the cultural consumption of youth and how does it impact society and in what manner. Lastly the students will be exposed to the idea of popular culture and the role of youth and how media helps in promoting the ideas of popular culture amongst youth.
Week 13
In the 13th week, The 5th unit of the course will be dealing with how media is shaping the youth’s understanding of society and the nature of their engagement within the society itself. The students will be engaging with the idea of youth as a concept to the nature of socialization being shaped by media within the youth in the society. The students will further be engaging in the debates and discussions on whether youth are seen as a consonance or deviance within the society. The unit will be dealing the nature of engagement of the youth within the society and it’s shaping by the media. Lastly, the unit will be emphasizing on the aspect of vulnerability that exists within the society regarding youth and the nature of media’s attention towards it.
Week 14
In the 14th week, the students will be dealing with the role of cinema in shaping of youth perception towards society and development. They will also learn about youth and the changing forms of participation in relation with contemporary forms of media. The students will also be dealing with new media as alternative space for engagement for the youth and the nature of vulnerability that exists in regard to youth within the society and media’s portrayal on such social issues.
Week 15
In week 15 the students will be exposed to the assignment /real life problems and general discussion with the Youth Media and Society.
